The variability is high because snippet size depends on how many active experiments and audiences you have configured.

When the anti-flicker snippet is active: the page CSS is loaded but the body opacity is set to 0 immediately, the user sees a blank white page, the Optimizely snippet downloads and executes, Optimizely applies variation changes, and then body opacity is restored.

The blank-page duration equals your Optimizely snippet's full load + execution time. On a fast connection with a cached snippet, this is 20–40ms (imperceptible). On a slow connection with an uncached snippet, this can be 300–1,000ms — which users absolutely notice.

Impact on Core Web Vitals when anti-flicker is active: LCP is delayed by the duration of the body hide. FID/INP is unaffected. CLS is theoretically improved (no layout shifts from variation application) but LCP will be worse.

1. Minimize active experiment count. Each active experiment adds to snippet size. Pause experiments you're not actively monitoring. Archive completed experiments. Run periodic snippet audits.

2. Keep variation code lean. Avoid large DOM manipulations, expensive selectors, or synchronous XHR in variation code. Every millisecond of variation JavaScript execution is paid at page load.

3. Set a short anti-flicker timeout. Default is 3,000ms — dangerously long. Set to 1,000–1,500ms. If Optimizely hasn't loaded in 1.5 seconds, your implementation has bigger problems.

4. Leverage browser caching. Optimizely's CDN sets appropriate cache headers. Don't do anything in your infrastructure that would prevent browser caching of the snippet URL.

5. Optimize snippet placement. The snippet should be the first script tag in the head section — not after stylesheets, not in the body, not loaded conditionally by a tag manager.
